Corsham Court

We drove over to tollbridge to Bathampton today and had a walk along the Kennet and Avon canal. Then we had lunch in a pub - son and I had the cod and chips and it was amazingly good. Hubby had the gammon and he was really impressed with that too.

We then went back over the tollbridge and on to Corsham where we visited the very interesting church, then had a walk through the small, very pretty, town until we found a quirky upstairs tea shop and had the most amazing cherry and rhubarb almond cake. And a cup of tea as well, of course! A visit to Corsham Court, a privately owned Manor House, was next. They have an extensive collection of paintings there. A very interesting man who used to teach Spanish history was one of the guides and, by an unusual painting of Queen Elizabeth 1, he gave us a lot of historical facts both about her and her background and attitude and also the Spanish Armada. Fascinating! He was very elderly, and must have been such a wonderful teacher in the past.

We then looked around the grounds, which were extensive, and in which quite a few late flowers were still blooming. A very worthwhile visit, but we wished we could have walked among the huge masses of topiary that were private.

Our last day on holiday so we will be heading home tomorrow.
