Temple Church

This is the last of the series of photos l took during my visit to the Inns of Court on Friday. At the heart of this area is the very beautiful Temple Church, known as the "mother church of the common law". The church was built by the Knights Templar, the soldier monks who protected pilgrims as they travelled to the holy lands during the crusades. The round church, modelled on the circular church of the holy sepulchre in Jerusalem, is the earliest gothic building in England and has been in use since 1162. Negotiations which resulted in the Magna Carta were held in this building.
The extra shows the outside round of the church.
