Driftwood

We had a very exhausting walk along the "beach" from Lyme Regis to Charmouth. Although it's only two and half miles, it was hard going walking on the big Jurassic stones with a strong buffeting wind. There were lots of interesting things to see - ammonites and fossils, driftwood, rusty car parts, a dead porpoise being eaten by a gull and the remains of a little deer. There have been major mud slides from the cliffs over recent years and this has revealed an old rubbish tip, hence the rusting objects. There was not a single bit of plastic in sight, thanks to a recent volunteers' clean up day.

It is only possible to walk on the beach at low tide and as it was high tide for our return we had to make a long detour on the diverted coastal footpath. Because of cliff erosion and the uncooperation of the big golf club, it is not possible to walk along the cliffs.

The weather has been changeable all day, from high winds and rain to sunshine. Overall it has been very grey and the seascape has taken on a greyish, brown hue. It has been great watching the waves crashing against the rocks.
