Carapaus at Caparica

We did get to the beach!

Costa da Caparica, to the south of Lisbon, as being least out of the way. Walked, and then got on a little train that runs along the beaches on the peninsula. Got a bit of a surprise on the way when we saw a fair number of naked men parading on the dunes at one point...!!

Only when we'd laid down on the sunbeds we'd hired did we realize how tired we were... long walk, talking out the frustrations, and then, the little train (proper, on rails) back, naked men still parading, to find the fishermen pulling in their catch, much like they do in the NE of Brazil, except here they use winches on tractors to pull the nets in, instead of manpower, and the flat-bottomed, high-prowed boats are quite different from the jangadas used there.

Extra of one of the tractors. The seagulls were in their hundreds, stealing a fish whenever they could. The catch was mainly sardines and carapaus (small mackerel), and huge heaps of discarded jelly-fish.

Dinner was barbecued carapaus, boiled potatoes and salad in a local restaurant.
