Seven months after applying for this job, five and a half months after finding I'd got it, roughly eleven weeks after starting working for BAS, nearly one week after departing the UK... I arrive at Bird Island.

The four winter occupants, plus another who was down early, greet us with gin and tonic on the jetty as the ship's captain decides to leave the bulk of the unloading work until the next day.
