Diary of an Edinburgher

Nîmes

A slightly later start this morning, which facilitated breakfast on our little balcony in the sun. Fresh fruit and yoghurt for a change. Then off for the 9.55 bus to Nîmes (€1.30).

We'd been to Nîmes years ago, but didn’t really see much. In fact, I don’t remember it being such a beautiful city, but it really is. They're applying for World Heritage listing, and it certainly should have this already. Its emblem is the crocodile chained to the palm tree, but I forget the story.

When you come out of the bus/railway station, you follow a great long wide tree lined boulevard, with beautiful large residences, right along to a huge park area, with a magnificent fountain, and thence to the 2,000 year old arena and old town centre.

We were delighted to spot a 'Petit Train'!! I am a big fan of these little tourist delights - a sign of growing old with dodgy knees - but this one was the best yet. 40 minutes round and about this well laid out city, full of fountains, ancient buildings, little squares with cafes, modern buildings, parks, water features and statues.

We then had a wander and chose a place for lunch which was very pleasant. The other two were raring to check out some shops, but I was stuffed, so I dandered back, slowly, and found a cafe near the station to await them. A couple of beers and my Kindle and the time passed pleasantly.

In fact, I’m so stuffed, (6.9km) I couldn’t be roused to go and sit in the square this evening, preferring a relaxing evening in our wee cosy cute French flat.

The BIG Market Day tomorrow.
