Mary, Queen of Scots got her head chopped off

But not here. This is Lochleven Castle, a late 14th or early 15th century tower where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567. The castle sits on an island in Loch Leven, the largest loch in lowland Scotland. After a year of imprisonment M, Q of S made a dramatic escape only to be recaptured and executed on the order of Good Queen Bess, her cousin. Such Stewart/Tudor skulduggery. My title is the name of a play by Liz Lochhead by the way.

Met our good friends S&J in Kinross this morning. We'd thought about doing the Loch Leven circuit of about 12 miles. But by the time we'd walked for an hour or so and had coffee and food at Loch Leven's Larder we thought better of that and just retraced our steps to Kinross. And more food. That was about 22,000 steps and quite enough.

It was, as forecast, very cold, bright and sunny. Not too windy so in the sun it felt pleasant. The loch was looking beautiful in the sunshine. The geese were flying in and taking off again. So noisy and a great sight. Saw the wee ferry going out to the island with visitors to the castle. It stops at the end of the month for the winter. As we left Kinross it was a lot cloudier and there were a few flakes of sleety snow.

Clocks go back tonight.
