On top of Ballyroon

A cold and frosty morning followed by the most beautiful day, the sort of day you need to be up high! We decided to walk along the ridge towards the end of the Sheep's Head, passing the ruins of the old signal tower and a ;lonely World War 2 lookout post. The place was heaving - everyone was out and about but it is Bank Holiday and the weather was stunning. We must have passed at least 8 people! When we got to Bernie's Cupan Tae, a very welcome café perched right at the end,  she was doing a roaring trade.
Did You know there are 872 trig points in Ireland??  Fascinating eh. I was going to astound you with information about the triangulation of Ireland but it's very complicated! Anyway Ireland was surveyed by the Ordnance Survey in 1824-32, for the purpose of working out acreages and taxable land. They did an incredible job - everything was recorded including holy wells, field names and townland names. Concrete Trig points, more triangulation (you're going to have to google that) came in the in the late 1930s I believe. This one marks the highest point on Ballyroon Mountain and that's Lough Doo behind it. In the other direction there are spectacular views out to the Atlantic - next landfall Nova Scotia!

And thank you for the love for Hy Brasil - that was a surprise!
