Tongland Power Station

Today's the day ...............….. to generate

It's not often that a Power Station could be described as architecturally beautiful - but personally, I think this one is.

It is just up the road from us and is the Tongland Power Station, part of the Galloway Hydro-electric Scheme, creating electricity from the power of water.  It was designed by the Scottish civil engineer, Sir Alexander Gibb, and built in the 1930s.  I think it has a bit of an art deco look about it.  It was fully refurbished in 2010 and still plays an important role in providing the local area with a total peak of around 106 megawatts of clean, green power.

At present it is still in the hands of Scottish Power but they have been talking to Drax, who would like to acquire Scottish Power’s gas and hydroelectric power plants in its latest attempt to diversify beyond its main North Yorkshire power plant.

Can't help thinking that might be a shame ……………………..
