In the Souk

We started the morning in the Kasbah, the old Berber district of the ancient city of Marrakesh, looking at the Saadian Tombs. Our second visit to Africa but the first to the north of the country, so different to South Africa where we were just under a year ago.
Moving on then to the Medina, the Arab old town and worked our way through the Souk. It is apparently unique in the Arab world as it is half commercial and half residential.

Our last stop in the Souk was at the Old Apothecary where we were treated to a demonstration of lots of spice mixtures and oils and unguents for all kinds of ailments. Some were excellent and I did buy a few.

Coming out into the Place Jemma El Fna. The heart of the city. We headed up to the Grand Balcon of the Cafe Glacier for a drink and ended up staying for about two hours and having lunch. Great view from up there and safer than falling foul of the many stalls where it seemed you were in trouble for taking a photo if you didn't pay! (I took a picture if a false teeth stall and the owner wanted paying!)

We did brave a return to the Souk and make a purchase from a similar shoe stall to this but didn't go in too deep as we were scared of not finding our way out again! May go back later in the week.

We meandered back to our hotel taking in a lovely green park and then sat chatting around the pool. A lovely start to our short break.

An early dinner tonight and then we are heading back to Jemma El Fna for the night time food stall frenzy that is world famous. Should be fun.
