We returned to Fort River Refuge this afternoon for the first time since July, with our friends Marge and Steve (visiting from Westchester). It was a superb sunny day, not too chilly.  The fall colors were everywhere, although many leaves have already fallen. We were a bit surprised to see quite a number of birds, although the migrants have long since passed through. However I did not take my long lens, and the birds were generally distant and moving constantly--impossible for my point-and-shoot, although it does have an optical 40x zoom. Best species were both kinglets: golden-crowned and rubycrowned (best-seen by Marylee).
