Notre Dame in 3D...

Pupils at Notre Dame High School in Glasgow have been creating artwork featuring birds in 2D and have moved on to 3D, looking at the work of George Wyllie. and in particular his love of birds, a recurring theme in his work.

As part of the online support for schools, teachers can access 750 photographs of his work and the pupils have been investigating his Berlin Burd, created as a protest against the Berlin Wall; his Assembly of Robins, created one Christmas when he decorated the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, with 500 robins, and was helped to do that by a lot of school pupils; and many more of his bird sculptures, big and small.

Moving on from their drawings, last week S1 pupils made peacocks and eagle 'feathers' out of willow and tissue paper.

This week they've been painting designs onto the individual 'feathers'.

And as well as moving from 2D to 3D, pupils are also moving from an individual piece of work to a group sculpture, true to George Wyllie's collaborative way of working

These are going to to be big sculptures, reflecting the scale of much of his work. His True Goose, created in Islay was about 10m tall! We'll be seeing how the class working together and on a grand scale in a future blip.

P7b at Kilbowie PS has also been working collaboratively and on a big scale today. This morning the pupils built a 4m high tetrahedron! And on their blip page they also seem to be planning something big together...
