Scoots, Shoots & Leaves

What is it???

I've been watching this structure go up for a while now and didn't know until this week that's it's an art installation. I knew it couldn't be a building - it's right at the east end of the Hawthorne Bridge and there's no land around it.

The Regional Arts and Cultural Council (an art funding stream) describes it thusly:

Inversion: Plus Minus is a set of towering site-specific sculptures created by artists/architects Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo of Lead Pencil Studio. Using weathered steel angle iron, the artists are presenting "ghosts" of former buildings at two similar sites along SE Grand Avenue. One site, at Hawthorne Boulevard, will feature a matrix of metal that almost appears as a solid building. In the artists' words, "The sculptures reference the outer shells of ordinary industrial buildings found in the Central Eastside Industrial Area like those that once existed on the project sites."

Here's a drawing of what the piece will look like when it's completed.

I'm using this as the first in a series for Kendall's One Street project. . My plan is to start here, at the beginning of Hawthorne Boulevard and work my way east, block by block, finding something blip-worthy in every block. No promises about how often I'll post them.
