Fabergé Museum, St Petersburg

We have travelled four hours northwest of Moscow by fast train, and are now in the cultural capital of Russia, St Petersburg.

One of the highlights today, while walking around the central city, was a visit to the Fabergé Museum.  Amongst more than 4000 works of art are the fabulous bejewelled Imperial Easter Eggs, made by order for the last two Tzars (Alexander and Nicholas), often for their wives.  Each egg took a year to make.

The image shows the Coronation Egg, presented in 1897 to Tsarina  Alexandra to commerate her coronation.  

In extras there is a close-up of the little surprise inside the velvet-lined egg - a precise replica of the 18th century imperial coach that carried her to her coronation.  The replica is 10cm in length.

Also in extra an image of one of the many canals in this beautiful city, though just now it is heading into winter, with sunrise at 9.08am and sunset 4.21pm.
