Out of season

This is Callander, in the heart of the Trossachs and a major tourist attraction, on a dreich November afternoon.

I drove over there this afternoon, my first long trip since knee surgery, to visit my favourite shoe shop, Rogerson, a retail outlet, which always has a sale on.

Despite the almost empty streets there were still some tourists, mainly English. I shared a table with a couple from Norfolk on their last day who were full of praise after their self-catering holiday:

“We did lots walking, the weather has been great…and it was so peaceful. We have just been to the Queen Elizabeth country park and saw all the red squirrels”.

So, if you want a really , really quiet holiday then come to Scotland out of season.
