Jute

Jute is often referred to as the ‘golden fibre’ due to its colour and cost-effectiveness. Dundee had been involved in textile processing for hundreds of years before jute came along, but during the second half of the 19th century it became the world's jute capital. The photo was taken in Verdant Works -Dundee’s amazing museum that was once a huge factory employing hundreds of women. Although the factories are long gone,  jute is one of the best alternatives to plastic bags as it can last for years and at the end of its life will have minimal environmental impact.  The Natural Bag Company is the only company still working with jute in Dundee keeping the tradition alive.  Click here to read more about Dundee and its jute on the company's website.
