For nighttime photography, I always set the exposure values manually. The first shot is just a test, taken with a rough guess of the settings. I'll use that to check the exposure, and adjust accordingly. Then I'll take something that's hopefully better.

Whilst having a look to see how dark/light this first shot was, the shop staff switched off all the lights for the night. It appears, I had a lucky guess!
