Chelsea embankment bench

Cast iron Sphinx armrests on the benches.

All part of the ornamentation seen along the whole of the north embankment as part of Bazalgette's sewage interception scheme that extended the whole embankment that elevated the road out over the river. The benches were built in the 1870s, along with numerous dolphins, camels, and fabulous giant fish on the riverside streetlamps, all designed by English architect George John Vulliamy.
