Starcross Pier

I returned to Cockwood this morning and was able to complete yesterday's failed mission. I could have taken another blip in the harbour there but decided to go a mile down the road to Starcross which is an interesting little place if only for the Atmospheric Railway engine house. It was an idea pioneered by Brunel whereby trains were sucked along by vacuum. It failed, mostly because of the available technology of the time. Rat's chewed the leather flaps that kept the vacuum in the metal pipe. It was a great idea and in tests trains of 120 tons were pulled along the stretch of track from Exeter to Starcross at 70mph. You can read a little more about it here if I've made you curious.

Anyway, I walked over the railway bridge to the pier for the Exmouth Ferry. It was a beautiful morning, until a little later. I quite like the messy look of this harbour with all the pontoons and the very functional ticket office. The ferry lined up quite nicely with the gap between the  breakwater and the pier too.

Thank you all very much for so many comments, stars and hearts on yesterday's 2190th blip. You're very kind and they're all appreciated.
