Churchill, Italians, St Magnus and Sacpa Flow

Early flight to Kirkwall for a meeting with panel and AST members and Councillors about the children’s hearings system. Supported by colleagues from SCRA, social work and others. A positive and informative event.

Lynne and I were met at the airport by Gordon, the volunteer learning and development co-ordinator. As we had an hour or two to spare, and as Lynne had never been to Orkney, he kindly took us on a drive over one of the Churchill barriers, built to keep Scapa Flow safe from u boats; (main blip); to the Italian chapel built by Italian prisoners of war with its amazing trompe l’oeuil painting; and ultimately to Kirkwall for lunch. On the way we had views of the Flow and the huge St Magnus cathedral, at night surrounded by festive lights. See all extras.

It was also great to meet up with several of the 18 panel members in Orkney, some of whom I remember from many years ago.
