The Great North Road

This little ‘back road’ though the centre of our village is what used to be part of the main north / south route between London and Edinburgh - commonly known as ‘The Great North Road’.

The village was frequently choked with slow moving traffic and eventually a two lane dual carriageway was built to the the west of the village to relieve the congestion.

That dual carriageway has undergone a few changes over the years - moved further west, widened to three lanes and ultimately upgraded to motorway standard and is now known as the A1(M).

Those of you familiar with the route south of Wetherby and north of the A1/M1 junction be thankful that you no longer have to squeeze through this tiny village - or many other similar places along the way!
