Russell Cotes Art Gallery & Museum

Ok, this isn’t today, but I intended and forgot to post it on blip.

Just before Xmas I visited the Russell Cotes (again) with a friend. Luckily ‘Pippa’ was doing a tour and we joined in. She is a wonderful guide and brings the house to life.
Here she is talking about the ‘Venus Verticordia”:-

“This iconic Pre-Raphaelite painting by Dante Gabriel Rossetti depicts “the turner of men’s hearts”, a femme fatale with her roots in both pagan and Christian traditions – luxurious, sensuous and rich with symbolism”

If you ever pop down to Bournemouth, the Russell Cotes is an absolute treasure. It’s a stunning building on East Overcliff, just up from the pier. Built by Mr R-C, a very wealthy former Lord Mayor here, as a gift to his wife.

And has a fantastic collection of Pre-Rafaelite art, not to mention other goodies collected by the Mr & Mrs Russell-Cotes on their travels.
