The Beacon

Wythburn Fell

It was a beautiful New Year’s Day. I went up to Harrop and on for the view from the Beacon but overstretched a bit. Before I headed back down into the frosty cool shade where the low winter sun couldn’t reach I sat, feeling rough, to regroup a little, and thought of the second half of Wordsworth’s poem, ‘These chairs they have no words to utter’....

‘I have thoughts that are fed by the sun.
The things which I see
Are welcome to me,
Welcome every one:’

...and carried on down.

Later I ran the van through to my friend’s to wish them a happy New Year and after tea and Christmas cake I headed back giving her daughter’s boyfriend a lift back into town.
