Bigger cash prizes

I went to Lenham and had a coffee in The Dog & Bear; it was disconcerting being so far away from my tin of Quality Street. Lenham Stores is next to the pub and proudly announces the local produce they sell.

Today saw the annual gnashing of teeth over the increase in railfares and this can be related to the local produce in Lenham Stores. Before the railways made it possible to shift farm produce quickly, and in bulk, into the city many poorer folk relied on what they could grow. Milk might come from a cow in the garden or cellar. Express Dairies were so named because they only used express trains to carry milk into London. Now most goods are conveyed by road but, for a time, our local produce would only have made it to plates in London by taking the train.

And a mile from Lenham Stores the new rail line now carries trains between Paddington and Paris.
