Self-portraits

Now ensconced in Ship Inn in Gatehouse of Fleet (where apparently Dorothy Sayers also once stayed) for a short break before re-entering the real world on Monday.

We stopped at the Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries on the way where I as hoping to see a self-portrait by Kate Campbell Muirhead Nicoll, a (very) distant cousin (second and three times removed to be precise) who was born in Perth but spent later part of her life in Gatehouse of Fleet. The picture wasn’t on display but the staff were extremely helpful and opened up the store room so we could see the picture and to my delight there was a second more recent portrait as well (extra). The main blip is a picture hanging in the entrance in which you can spy me and MrT.

We then stopped of to visit the gallery in Kircudbright (another of my ancestors pictures is owned by Stewarty Museum but in deep storage). We enjoyed seeing the work of other artists associated with area.

Now relaxing in hotel - don’t know if it is the one where Dorothy Sayers stayed but think I will read Five  Red Herrings which she wrote whilst staying here (or at least inspired by her stay here).

Looking forward to exploring tomorrow, an area of the country I am not at all familiar with.
