Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Echoes of bad times

Two of a group of three pillboxes in the dunes overlooking Balmedie Beach. They form part of the beach defences running for some 12 miles North from Aberdeen. They were built in 1940-41 in  anticipation of an invasion by the German forces.
These pillboxes are unusual in that the firing apertures face inland rather than out to sea from where the Germans would have arrived. They were probably designed to defend a small radar station against any encircling troops who had managed to get onshore.
