The Edge of the Wold

On the edge

After the grey and murky days, this was the brightest and loveliest day since New Years Day, and I had spent most of it in a meeting room in Penrith with the blinds drawn. There was just time when I got home to pick up Gus and take him for his first walk of 2019 along the estuary.

Last year we got out of the habit of walking here in the evenings. Why? Yes, it is the same walk with minor variations, a there and back again stroll from the end of the prom. But the light and tide are different every time, and sunset transforms the view magically. Here the post sunset colours were fading fast. Gus and I usually follow the limestone platform above the muddy shore to avoid disturbing the occasional curlew, heron or egret. This man and his frenetic trio of barking dogs was less sensitive, so here he is to give some scale to the view.

Poor Gus had had a tummy upset, an indiscretion in the house, he was mortified. Our neighbour had come in to give him his lunchtime walk and she heroically cleared up the mess so when I got home there was nothing to be seen. What kindness.
