The Edge of the Wold

Sycamash

Closer examination of this tree on the eastern side of Esthwaite Water revealed it was a chimera of an ash and a sycamore fused together at the base.

We chose the perfect day to be in the Lake District, revisiting the scene of prolonged, dogged negotiations over 10 years ago. The result was that the major remaining source of organic pollution to the lake was finally removed. Since then water quality has been steadily improving, the lake is full of fish which attract ospreys and otters, and we optimistically look forward to the return of the slender naiad to its only English locality.

A good day out. And in case anyone is wondering, Gus was there too.
