Winter Sun

Another brilliant sunny morning with long shadows cast from this avenue of limes with their characteristic large burrs and twiggy shoots at the base. Limes are associated with fertility. In France and Switzerland, they are a symbol of liberty, and were planted to celebrate battles.Victoria Park was opened in 1887 to mark the Jubilee of Queen Victoria, making these trees over 130 years old. The construction work was carried out using labour from the shipyards during a time of depression and cost just £4000.Victoria Park is listed on Historic Scotland’s Gardens and Designed Landscapes Inventory and is one of the most visited parks in Glasgow.
