Sunlight on stone

The buildings in the foreground are new University of Strathclyde developments in George Street viewed from the rear. In the background is a landmark towerblock built in the 60s - the Livingstone Tower, leased by the University. The tower is scheduled to remain in use until 2023 under the University's £300m masterplan for campus renewal when it will be returned to Glasgow City Council. It was state of the art in its construction methods at the time – being clad with a curtain wall in opaque dark green glass spandrels framed by orange metal uprights. These were replaced in 2010 except on the south elevation seen in the picture. When I was attending a photography course in the 1980s it was one of the buildings that students photographed with a special camera to practise avoiding converging verticals. What a weight! The mind boggles. These Perspective Control/Tilt Shift lenses are able to move the lens axis (or optical centre) to compensate for the distortion.
