Goosander and perch

Frost is the great transformer, and the morning sun reflected off every crystal, filling the world with dazzling light. The river surface  gleamed like polished copper, a perfect setting for the solitary female goosander, who had left the rest of her flock behind on the nearby lake. She dived repeatedly, eventually emerging with a sizeable perch, which she held fast in her saw-edged beak. The fish wriggled furiously and it almost seemed that it might escape, but the goosander held it tightly, even though she struggled to swallow it. Having sated her hunger, she drifted to the river's edge and sat peacefully with some mallards and a swan, occasionally raising a bright red foot to scratch her head.
