Ladies in Black

...has been made into a film. I found it hard to engage with at first as there was no plot, just a story about some shop assistants in 1959 ( in Sydney). The writing is however first class and once I “got to know” the characters enjoyed it thoroughly. All the places they visited are familiar and it’s amazing how life has changed from those days in how we dress and act and shop.

One review says it’s ”funny, affectionate and moving”. Another “ the classic Australian novel about finding happiness - and the perfect dress”. I agree.
