pin ups

As we were saying today, there is no shortage of barbers' and hairdressers' shops in Dumfries. One of the newest to open up is Mrs Howat's Vintage Barbers - I walked past in my lunch hour today. The decor is pretty cool (vintage, as you might expect) and they have a really nice play area for children (and an amazing car for under 3's to sit in while their hair is being cut). They are also wheelchair accessible which is not the case with many such premises.

The photos in their window feature a line up of film stars...D and I have been watching a lot of vintage films recently. Recently we saw "Anatomy of a Murder" starring James Stewart and last night it was "The Man With The Golden Arm" with a young Frank Sinatra. Both were directed by Otto Preminger in the 1950's and had great title sequences by Saul Bass. Both rather gritty films and no doubt shocking in their day.

Another film we watched recently was actually inspired by a poster showing haircuts from the 1940s - this was the Coen brothers' "The man Who Wasn't There" in which Billy Bob Thornton plays a taciturn, small-town barber, circa 1949.
