Somerset……

…………………Cottage

George & Cornelia Harvey built this cottage in the summer of 1858-9. They had arrived in Nelson, NZ on the barque ‘Cresswell’ from Somerset and settled near Upper Moutere. The locality where they farmed became known as Somerset Valley and the farm was named Somerset Farm.

The Harvey family owned the cottage for fifty years before it was sold and eventually fell into disrepair.

Descendants and locals worked to restore this cottage in 1989 and it now gives the public a glimpse of a house from early settlement days of this colony.

Thanks to Steveng for hosting Wide Wednesday.

Many thanks for the comments, stars and hearts for yesterday’s little “caterpillar with a spiky hairdo”
