New Place

After lunch we went into Stratford and visited New Place, the location of Shakespeare's Stratford home, now gardens.  A feature of the place is a very old mulberry tree said to have grown from a cutting of the original tree planted by Shakespeare which was chopped down when the house was demolished in 1750.  There is also a second mulberry grown from an offshoot of that tree planted by Dame Peggy Ashcroft in 1969. Her ashes are scattered at the base of the tree.

I've put a picture of the older mulberry tree in the extras.

Also in the Great Garden, as it is called as opposed to the Knot Garden close by, are statues of  interpretations from some of Shakespeare's plays. This is from A Midsummer Night's Dream.
