the crinan canal for me

The weather was properly wet today....We decided to go out anyway and to walk from our cottage at Cairnbaan along the canal to Crinan and back, a distance of just over 7 miles in total.

The canal is about 9 miles long from Ardrishaig on Loch Fyne to Crinan on the sound of Jura. It opened in 1801 but there were initial problems which were sorted out by the great Thomas Telford in 1816. Queen Victoria's visit in 1847 did wonders for its reputation as a tourist destination. Apparently 2,000 boats pass along it every year, but I haven't seen one yet.

There are 15 locks on the canal, and here is number 10, at Dunaddry. Lock 16 is the name of the famous seafood restaurant at the Crinan Hotel :-)
