Shoah Memorial Paris

This is the façade of the Mémorial de la Shoah (see below for a link to its texts* in English). We visited the Shoah today for an exhibition on "The Internment of the Nomads"-- a catch-all classification for gypsies, bohemians and people with no fixed abode (many born in France). The categorizing of these people began at the end of the 19th century, and they were  incarcerated from 1940 to 1946. It's a haunting parallel to the internment of Japanese and Germans in the United States at the same time (photographed by by Dorothea Lange).  I can't resist posting a cute shop window as the extra; we're in the Marais, with very fashionable stores.

*The texts on the Shoah's façade are here, translated into English. The French one is a tribute to "the Unknown Jewish Martyr."
