EIAC Day 3

Tonight I went through to Glasgow with nadinepierce to see the final evening of the athletics. Although we were close to the track, action photos were hard to take with my camera. With all the events being finals and the last two being the relays, there were athletes all over the place celebrating with national flags, making it very colourful.

Then there was the Accredited Neutral Athlete from Russia who won the women's pole vault in front of us. As with all these carefully tested clean Russians, she's not permitted a national strip or to carry a flag. Although this is correct, I found it touching: someone who is clean inside a corrupted system deserves my respect. In the extra she's with the silver medallist from GB, and the bronze from Greece.

The photo I settled on captures the night well. If you were asked to pick out the most obviously athletic woman in this line-up, you might be drawn to the slender tanned figures from the continent, and not notice the pasty-faced girl on the left, but with a lap and a half to go, she ran away from the field to win by 25m. She is, of course, the imperious Laura Muir.
