Aquamarine/Nanna K's Day

Whales!

An adventure for sure! Lots of wind made for lots of Chop (extra) but our panga boatman Miguel was very skilled and I loved it ( even tho I hate wind) The 35 ton grey whales come from the Bering sea every feb-March to give birth in Baja in 3 bays on the west coast. Whaling of these great animals only came to an end in 1966 and their numbers came back from a low of 2000 to 20000 as they are now protected. ( their main preditor is killer whales) Their annual migration is 15 -20 thousand miles ! 4 months each way! In spite of the fact that they had been slaughtered not that long ago,, now the mothers have been pushing their babies toward these little boats with people and loving being petted. Of course I wanted to see a baby up close. But not to be. Lots of whales, but no babies did we see. Our boatman hasn’t seen one by his boat for 2 years. 7 hours altogether of bumping up and down. ( Had a few boat issues in shallow water getting back..) But very happy to have seen what we saw! Will definitely do more reading about these interesting creatures.! I put the boat in the blip so you get an idea how close they were....just picked a couple... could do better later with the computer.
Then we had to hop in the van for our 3.5 hour ride to LaPaz, where we have enjoyed a lovely dinner with our friend on his patio .
So,.... tired...too much sitting and bumping. . will stay put a few days now.
You can see a few other photos here on their website....http://www.magdalenabaywhales.com/whoweare.html
