Rorkes Drift

The photograph is taken looking out from Rorkes Drift (South Africa) hospital where the battle centred on 22-23 January 1879. About 140 British Army regulars held off up to 4,000 Zulu warriors. Some 15 on the Army side were killed and between 400-600 Zulus. Some 11 Victoria Cross were awarded, plus numerous other awards.

The Zulu's were to savagely avenge their dead following Rorkes Drift.
