Kelo

A snag, or kelo in Finnish, is an old tree that has dried out and shed its bark. The outer surface becomes grey and inside is a dense reddish heartwood. Pine trees in the Arctic are very slow growing and live to around 3 or 4 hundred years old. The process a tree undergoes to become a kelo takes several decades, after which time the tree may stand in place for centuries as they never seem to rot until eventually they fall over and the undergrowth encloses and absorbs them.
