Miles and miles of mires

This is what the Arctic is really special for ...  Aapa mires are a fabulous wealth of fresh water and a huge store of carbon. They differ from the bogs back home in that they are rich in mineral nutrients from the underlying rocks. Hence they are literally humming with life in the warmer months.
Fortunately for us at the moment, the biting insects are all well iced in. Come back in the summer and your peace is very short lived when you get outdoors.
