...the prickly pear was introduced to Australia in the 19th century as a natural agricultural fence and as a potential source of cochineal from the scale insect that lives on many of the Opuntia species.

They are considered an invasive weed but the fruit is harvested by local families (clad in heavy gloves and using contraptions worthy of Wallace and Gromit) and much sought after.
