Clymping for Perfection

Last day in the South, I took Mother to St Mary's in Clymping, one of Simon Jenkins' 2* best churches. The tower is Norman built about 1170 as a watch tower for defence against invaders to Arundel Castle. The tower was built next door to a Saxon church, originally timber and thatch, but later made from stone, surprisingly spacious and lofty and joined onto the tower about 750 years ago. There is a saying about Sussex churches; Bosham for antiquity, Boxgrove for beauty and Clymping for perfection.
We were lucky that a local resident parked by the church had a key and showed us round.
Google maps showed us there was a cafe nearby at Edgecumbs coffee merchants and roasters in Ford. Difficult to find but very very well worth visiting. A successful day out
