Lady Anne again

Last year I posted a couple of blips about Lady Anne Clifford, who had a big influence on buildings in this area. (Follow the tag for a reminder.)

This is Brough Castle, easily seen from the A66, but not that often visited. Built by the Normans in 1100 on the site of a Roman fort, it had a chequered history, being almost totally destroyed by the Scots, rebuilt and then devastated by fire. It came eventually into the Clifford family and was one of the castles that Lady Anne Clifford restored in the 18th century. The rounded tower was Clifford Tower and was where Lady Anne lived when she was in residence.

The castle commands a fantastic view of the countryside all around, but it was a cold wind blowing up there this afternoon. Nor was it the weather for a visit to the Ice Cream Parlour on site.
