The Old Forge (Monday 25th March 2019)

The blossom from the plum tree has mostly fallen to the ground and the crocii are already over, but a year-old Victoria plum, in a sheltered position in a whisky barrel on the patio, that flowered slightly later is still intact.

The Walker Brothers - Nite flights (recorded February 1978)

Scott Walker (whose death was announced by his record label 4 A.D. on this day) as a person was a million miles from the average teenage heart throb that he seemed to so many in the sixties, and his musical and acting careers went through many a change, from playing bass in a guitar group called the Routers in the early sixties, to his phenomenal success as a singer in the Walker Brothers, to the complex and difficult, sometimes harrowing pieces of his last couple of decades' work.
His last two published works were film scores for Brady Corbet's films The Childhood of a Leader and last year's Vox Lux. He had been a keen film buff in his youth, favouring European directors such as Bergman, Godot and Truffaut.
These wholescale reinventions made it very difficult to choose a representative one track for his musical life: from the Spectoresque hits he had as a Walker Brother or the critical successes of his more extreme later works as sonwriter and performer. As a compromise I've chosen one of his early compositions recorded for the final Walker Brothers album, a song that was later covered by both David Bowie and the Fatima Mansions.
