Sicilian Adventure - Day 6!

The arches of Castello Maniace, Ortigia

A return to blue skies and sunshine, and warm when sheltered from the wind. And a day spent exploring the beautiful island of Ortigia, the historic area of Siracusa.

First port of call was Castello Maniace, a 13th century citadel and castle that used to guard the entrance to the harbour of Siracusa. From there we followed the coastal road around the island to the market and to Caseificio Borderi, where the owner creates the most amazing sandwiches. You choose your main ingredient, eg cheese, ham etc, and then he creates his masterpiece! Just look at the size of the sandwich in extras!

After tackling that mountain of a sandwich, we spent the afternoon wandering through the atmospheric alleys of Ortigia, stopping off at our favourite cafe opposite the cathedral, browsing the shops, eating gelato, and rounding off the day at a bar for aperitifs and my first Arancini of the trip (watch this space thebroon!).

(Am back home now and back blipping. Didn’t get to bed until the wee small hours of the morning so it’ll take me a while to catch up, but I will get there. In the meantime, thank you so much for your kind comments, stars and hearts for my journal.)
