Yellowhammer

A gorgeous spring walk round the backwater at the end of Station Road, Ailsworth. The leaves of the hawthorn were bursting forth and willows are covered with golden catkins. Among the many birds defending their territories was this yellowhammer, a farmland bird that's declined enormously, largely because of the shift away from sowing spring wheat. However, it remains frequent in out local area, thriving in mature hedgerows and patches of scrub left among the arable fields.
