tempus fugit

Coping skills

The old church here stood so close to the sea that on the stormy night of 25/26 October 1859 it was broken down by the waves and washed away leaving only the west door and the bell tower above it intact (extra). This was one of many maritime and coastal catastrophes wrought by the Royal Charter Storm, so-called after the ship of that name was wrecked on the Anglesey coast with the loss of 450 lives and a cargo of Australian gold, parts of which are still being salvaged.

No lives were lost here, only dead bodies from graves and the old church as it was. Another was built higher up. People coped.

(I never go here without remembering visiting with Kendall and Sue almost 4 years ago.)
