The Edge of the Wold

Arnside Gormley

I'm always a bit nervous when I see people out in the estuary, the "sands" deserve their reputation. It was not many years ago when there was a rescue of a boy stuck in the mud just 50 metres out from the Pier. This person tonight was being watched by her friends on the prom, and the Coastguard Station is only a few hundred metres away, but even so, it's a scary experience for anyone to get caught out. And not much fun for the Coastguard and emergency services when they are fighting against time as the tide turns (the bore was due about 2 hours after this).  Anyway, no-one came to any harm, and the little figure gives a Gormleyesque feel and scale to the Kent estuary.

I had a day working at home today, keeping Gus company. He's getting a bit too stiff for leaving in the back of the car outside the office all day. There was a time when we used to have a half day on Maundy Thursday, and today I knocked off mid-afternoon to water the allotment and sow some more seeds. The warmer days have stimulated the potatoes, they are appearing above ground, and the turnips are germinating. And we are still eating our winter crops.

It looks like Arnside is going to have a busy Easter weekend, the prom and The Ship were thronging with people this evening. We shall be elsewhere, and out of blip range for a couple of days.
